Obituary for John Germano

John A. Germano

John A. Germano, 87, of Rockford, IL, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 31, 2022, with his wife by his side. John was born October 8, 1934, in Rockford, the son of John and Ida (Gatti) Germano. He graduated from Rockford East High School, Class of 1952, where he participated in ROTC. John married Angelene M. Corirossi on October 4, 1958, in Rockford at St. Anthony's of Padua Church, and from that union they had two daughters, Maria and Teresa. John proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1963. In 1961, John’s 814th quartermaster company was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis and were stationed in Ft. Lee Virginia. He received an honorable discharge in March 1963. While in the army, he held the position of Staff Sergeant and received the outstanding soldier award in basic training. He was a member of the Bricklayers Local 31 and in 1979, John followed in his father's footsteps and became a Winnebago County Sheriff Deputy. He finished his career as a crime scene investigator for Winnebago County, retiring in October 1996. John was a phenomenal hockey player and played on several leagues at the Wagon Wheel with his friends. He would freeze over the backyard at his house in the winter and taught his oldest daughter, Maria, how to play hockey at 4 years old. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and would go on yearly trips with the "guys" up north. He also enjoyed the morning gatherings at the donut shop with his other retired friends. John and Angie traveled to Florida for over 20 years to escape the Illinois winters. They thoroughly enjoyed their time down south and all the friends they met along the way. John's most enjoyable time was when he was watching his grandchildren compete in their extracurricular activities, whether it was football, basketball, baseball, swimming, softball, volleyball, dance or cheer - he was always there to support them all. He was a well-respected baseball and softball coach for several years, having coached boys' baseball and girls' softball at St Bernadette's and Roy Gayle. He always enjoyed following his daughter's softball careers through grade school, high school, and college. He never missed a game. John was always a prankster and loved to play jokes on everyone, especially his wife, Angie. Probably his most notable prank was on his grandmother, Ma Germano. We still laugh about it to this day, yet it happened over 50 years ago. He loved watching The Three Stooges, Sanford & Son, The Golden Girls, Andy Griffith, and the Chicago Cubs. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Angie; daughters, Maria Schlickman and Teresa (Tom) Myers; grandchildren, Nicholas (Amy) Akers, Jonathan Correa, Julianne (Kyle) Spencer, Jennifer Correa, Jessica Correa, Stephanie Nold, Aly (Rich) Gartman, and Zach Myers; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Audrina, Angelina, Giovanni, Emerson, Harper, Elena, and Arlo; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceased by his parents, his father was killed in the line of duty; and sister, Marjorie (Marge) Bennett. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Alden-Debes, hospice wing, who took such good care of John allowing his final days to be comforting and peaceful. You will always have a special place in our hearts. Thank you to OSF Hospice for their support over the past two weeks. Rest easy Johnny, Dad and Grandpa - We all love you very much, Baccala.
