John Samuel Moore
John Samuel Moore, 85, of Rockford, IL, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at P A Peterson at the Citadel. Born April 17, 1937, in Portage, WI, the son of Samuel Edison and Laura Mabel (Holtz) Moore. Veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He married Ellen Elaine Kittmann on November 12, 1960. Owned and operated John's Auto and John's Rentals.
John very much looked forward to weekend "council meetings" when he, his son-in-law, Ron, and friends would gather in his garage to talk, have coffee and snacks, and tackle projects. A master mechanic and carpenter, he enjoyed figuring out how to fix and/or build things.
Family was important to John, and he never hesitated to let someone know how much they meant to him. He considered many close friends family, and was blessed to have their friendship, companionship and support, especially during his illness and final days.
He was an outgoing man who loved people, had a great sense of humor, was fond of telling stories, and had a heart of gold. He and Ellen would occasionally take day trips, but were mostly homebodies who preferred just sitting together on the swing on the veranda.
Survivors include his daughter, Virginia (Ronald) Whittington; sister-in-law, Paula (Bruce) Reilly; niece, Tanya Browne; nephews, Joshua (Carla) Reilly, Jeff (Brenda) Kendall, and Dean Kendall; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; close friends, Gary (Deb) George, Ed (Patricia) Whittington, Mitch (Karen) Whittington, Ernie Hunter, Tim (Jo Ann) Scott, Clarence Weber, Percie (Tammy) Ellis, III, Denny Harms, and Don (Linda) Klagues.
