Obituary for Robert "Bob" Deiter

Robert “Bob” Merle Deiter

Robert “Bob” Merle Deiter of Plano, TX, formerly of Glen Carbon, Rantoul, Pawnee, and Pecatonica, IL. He grew up in Grant County, WI, and Rockford, IL. (He has always said he was kicked out of Wisconsin because he didn’t drink beer or eat cheese!)

Robert “Bob”, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, grandson, and friend to countless people, passed away May 16, 2023.

Bob was born the 5th child to Ethel and Elmer Deiter in Grant County, WI, on August 5, 1929. His brother, Daryl, and sisters, Dorothy, Dolores, and Donna, along with both of his parents have preceded him in death. When his brother passed, he made the statement that he felt very lonely with all of his siblings gone.

Bob had his daughter, DeAnne and son-in-law, Mike, by his side as he passed on to Heaven where he will find his wife, Sandy, waiting for him, along with his brother, sisters, and his mother and father. They will lead him along the path.

Bob is survived by five loving children, Scott Deiter, DeAnne (Mike) Rogers, Rhonda (Gerald) Meinert, Roberta Stogdill, and Susan Edge; his daughter by marriage, Valerie (Doug) Rodden; and son-in-law, Kenneth (Cindi) McGlaughlen; grandchildren, Rachel, Jarrod, Angelique, Bryce, Kristyna, Kala, Kenny, Kelly, Kerry, Rachel and Jennifer; many great-grandchildren; his loving, adoring nieces and nephews; and two very adoring puppy dogs, Wiggles and Kenny, he’s shared his last 4 years with. He is preceded in death by a daughter by marriage, Wanda (Kenneth) McGlaughlen; and wives, Nancy, Sandy, and Rosemary.

Bob was very proud of his nearly 25 years of service in the United States Army, retiring in 1989 as a Command Sergeant Major (E9). He served on the front lines of Korea and in the Army Reserve. He joked that the Army flew him as fast as they could to Korea and brought him back on the slowest boat they could find.

Bob had two great passions. He loved to have a garden and each year his garden expanded. He never seemed to realize he was increasing the size, but he kept adding more vegetables and adding more rows of what he was planting. The garden is in again this year and Bob supervised Mike’s nephew, Stephen, and Mike as they dug the rows and planted the seeds.

His second passion was woodworking. When he moved to Texas, he told DeAnne and Mike he had one requirement from them. They had to provide him with a woodshop. Mike did just that and then the two of them were like kids in a candy store finding tools and machines to fill the shop. If they found anymore, they would need to attach them to the ceiling on a pulley system! Mike and Bob enjoyed being in the shop together making pens, trivets, kids chairs, and repairing items for people.

He liked working in the yard but at 90+ he didn’t do much other than the garden. We all planted his iris last year - Bob directing and Mike and DeAnne with the planting. They came up with beautiful blooms.
