Shirley Jean Means

Shirley Jean Means, 71, of Machesney Park, passed away Monday, July 18, 2022, at Amberwood Care Center. Born June 1, 1951, in Rockford, the daughter of Arthur K. and Betty (Helwig) Stavn. Married Glenn W. Means on December 30, 1988. Employed by the Rockford Register Star as a mailer for 35 years, retiring in 2013. Lifetime member of the Rockford Historical Society. Shirley enjoyed watching the Cubs play, and riding around looking at and photographing historical sites, especially old wooden bridges. She collected snow globes over the years and sock monkeys. Shirley also enjoyed Betty Boop, The Three Stooges, fishing and riding her bike. Survivors include her husband, Glenn; stepdaughters, Janice (Mike Walsh) Means of Chicago and Jacalyn (Joe) Evers of Elgin; stepson, Geoffrey Means of Rockford; 6 step-grandchildren from Texas, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois; and best friend, Helen Bursey; goddaughter, Emily Harker; and godson, Jacob Harker, all of Rockford. Predeceased by her father, Arthur in 1965; her mother, Betty in 1990; and her favorite uncle, Al Helwig in 2005.

Service at noon Friday, July 22, 2022, in Delehanty Funeral Home, 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with visitation from 11 a.m. to service time. Burial in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.
